A Montreal family is accusing their child鈥檚 school of doing little to stop a bullying problem that ended with their son stabbed in the eye with a pencil last month.
Ten-year-old Alexandro Baiamonte has undergone surgery and now wears an eyepatch. It will take months before doctors can judge whether his vision will fully return.
The child鈥檚 parents say they鈥檙e now considering legal action against the École François-La-Bernarde school.
鈥淭he school didn鈥檛 bother to call an ambulance, they didn鈥檛 bother (to do) nothing,鈥� his father told CTV Montreal.
The family says the violent altercation happened during lunch hour on April 22 when two boys approached Alexandro on the sidewalk off school property.
鈥淗e came out with two pencils in his hand, he said, 鈥楥ome fight me,鈥欌�� Alexandro told CTV Montreal.
He said he managed to get a pencil out of one boy鈥檚 hands, but the other child still had one.
鈥淚 turned around and he gave me the pencil in the eye,鈥� Alexandro said.
He then walked home with the help of a friend and returned to school with his mother, who looked to piece together what happened.
The school board has confirmed that the attacker was suspended following the incident. They did not comment further.
Alexandro鈥檚 parents say school staff could鈥檝e done more to prevent the stabbing.
鈥淭he school didn鈥檛 take no measures to put teachers in the schoolyard,鈥� Alexandro鈥檚 father said.
The family has yet to officially launch legal action, but they say Alexandro will attend a different school next September.
