International Day of the Girl Child -- or simply Day of the Girl -- takes place every Oct. 11. It鈥檚 a day to push for girls鈥 rights around the world, and acknowledge the special challenges they face.
The first International Day of the Girl took place in 2012.
The United Nations first declared every Oct. 11 as International Day of the Girl on Dec. 11, 2011 by adopting Resolution 66/170.
The Resolution recognizes, in part, that 鈥渆mpowerment of and investment in girls, which are critical for economic growth 鈥, as well as the meaningful participation of girls in decisions that affect them, are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights.鈥
