A Canadian military veteran who fought Islamic State militants alongside Kurdish forces in Iraq has returned home, his parents announced Tuesday.

Ontario Conservative MPP Randy Hillier and his wife Jane said they are 鈥減roud and relieved鈥 that their son, Dillon Hillier, returned safely.

Hillier, a retired corporal who served in Afghanistan, went to northern Iraq last November to help the Kurdish fighters.

鈥淛ane and I would like to express our deep appreciation to all those who contacted us, offering their thoughtful and generous support to our son Dillon while he was engaged alongside the Peshmerga in Iraqi Kurdistan against the Islamic State,鈥 his parents wrote.

鈥淒illon will be taking time to readjust and reunite with friends and family at home before he is available for any further public comment or availability.鈥

In early December, a group assisting Canadian veterans who want to volunteer in the fight against ISIS posted a video that appeared to show Hillier bandaging an injured Kurdish fighter amid intense gunfire in the background.

At the time, Randy and Jane Hillier said they were proud of their son and his courage.
