Many Edmontonians are thrilled about the new accidental beach in town, but some people who live nearby are hoping the city will better deal with its consequences.
A strip of golden sand on the shores of the North Saskatchewan River was created rather suddenly, after a construction project diverted the water flow.
Mason Gates, who was soaking up sun on the new accidental beach on Tuesday, said it鈥檚 鈥渁wesome.鈥
鈥淒on鈥檛 have to go anywhere,鈥 Gates said. 鈥淪aves an hour-and-a-half drive.鈥
Bonney Gaalaas, who lives in a condo nearby, says she doesn鈥檛 mind having the new attraction in her backyard but hopes the city will regulate it.
鈥淭here's partying going on until 11 at night,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t used to be so nice and quiet around here.鈥
In addition to noise, the sunbathers have brought more litter and are creating parking issues for residents, according to city councillor Ben Henderson.
Henderson made an official inquiry to the city Tuesday, asking what they might do to regulate the beach.
鈥淲e need to come up with answers without ruining the fun,鈥 he said.
It鈥檚 unclear how long the beach might last, but some are already pushing city council to try and make it permanent.
