KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The commander of Canadian Forces overseas says the military is trying to avoid large-scale fighting with the Taliban this summer, just as thousands of NATO troops arrive in southern Afghanistan.
Lt.-Gen. Marc Lessard says this summer won't be a repeat of Operation Medusa, a deadly battle in 2006 in Panjwaii that was considered successful in ridding the region of the Taliban.
Lessard says while there will be tactical fighting, the Canadian military will strive to avoid any major operations.
He says Canada's role in Panjwaii would involve trying to encourage Taliban sympathizers to change their views.
His comments come as thousands of additional troops arrive as part of an offensive that aims to clear Kandahar City of the Taliban.
The city has endured a rise in violence in recent weeks ahead of the looming operation.
