Ikea Canada will be opening a retail location in London, Ont. But unlike its typical sprawling stores, this one will serve primarily as a pick-up location for items customers have purchased online or in other stores.
The store will be located at 3198 Wonderland Rd. S, and is slated to open later this year.
In addition to picking up items they've already purchased, customers will also be able to buy Ikea services, browse the company website to make additional purchases, and buy a small number of products that will be sold at the store.
Ikea Canada President Stefan Sjöstrand said the "Pick-Up-Points" locations permit the company to quickly expand into emerging markets.
"The Pick-Up-Points allow Ikea to expand quickly into markets that have been identified as having potential, resulting in consumers having easier access to our products," he said in a statement.
London Mayor Matt Brown welcomed the news.
"The Southwestern Ontario region will be well served by this Pick-Up-Point location – the first of its kind in North America," he said in a statement.
"Our city has been chosen to test new products, concepts and service delivery models for decades. Londoners have been looking forward to welcoming IKEA here for many years and now we look forward to watching it grow."
The company said it will be hiring about 20 employees to work in the new London store.
Ikea currently has 12 stores in Canada.
