KELOWNA, B.C. - A firefighter in Kelowna, B.C., has received two awards for his courageous actions following a shooting in that Okanagan city last August that killed gangster Jonathan Bacon.
Kris Rainey was jogging past a resort complex near downtown Kelowna on Aug. 14, when someone opened fire on an SUV carrying several people, including Bacon and a full patch member of the Hells Angels.
The commendation says not only did Rainey help stop traffic and direct resort staff to keep bystanders inside, he was also one of just two people who reached the shooting victims before paramedics could arrive.
In a ceremony in Kelowna, Rainey has been awarded the B.C. Medal of Bravery and an RCMP detachment commander's certificate.
Bacon died at the scene, the Hells Angel member and two women in the SUV were wounded and an unidentified man linked to a third gang fled the vehicle.
Police have not named any suspects or made any arrests in what anti-gang task force members believe was a targeted shooting stemming from B.C.'s underworld drug wars.
