TORONTO - Canada's cocky pop princess Avril Lavigne is again facing attack for her songwriting claims, this time from celebrated singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk.
The Winnipeg songstress has blasted the punky singer for purporting to write her own material and even suggests that Lavigne stole one of her songs for Lavigne's current smash disc, "The Best Damn Thing.''
"Avril doesn't really sit and write songs by herself or anything,'' Kreviazuk tells the American music magazine, "Performing Songwriter.''
"Avril will also cross the ethical line, and no one says anything. That's why I'll never work with her again.''
Kreviazuk says that two years ago, she sent the Napanee, Ont., singer a song called "Contagious'' and notes that a song with the same name appears on the track listing of Lavigne's latest album.
L.A. singer Evan Taubenfeld-who collaborated with Lavigne on the record-tells the Globe and Mail that he and Lavigne wrote the song from scratch and that any similarities it may have with Kreviazuk's "Contagious'' end with the title.
Neither musician could be reached by the Globe and Mail; nor would Lavigne's lawyer or music representatives comment on Kreviazuk's accusations.
Kreviazuk tells the magazine she would never take the issue to court.
"Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy. Art should be pure. In my head it is, anyway,'' she says.
This isn't the first time Lavigne has been criticized over her songwriting claims.
One-time songwriting partner Lauren Christie, part of the hitmaking production team The Matrix ("Sk8er Boi'' and "I'm With You''), suggested in a Rolling Stone article that the singer did little but "change a word here or there.''
Lavigne has insisted the pair crafted the melodies and lyrics together, saying she was deeply hurt by the comments and will never work with the hitmakers again.
