MONTREAL - Protesters from Quebec anti-war organizations held a demonstration today as much in support of American war resisters as to keep the Conservative government out of power.
About 50 protesters marched outside government buildings in Montreal to draw attention to American war resister Jeremy Hinzman's upcoming deportation from Canada on Sept. 23.
The protest was part of a pan-Canadian day of action to support American soldiers seeking refugee status in Canada as conscientious objectors against the Iraq War.
The demonstrators also called for a greater discussion about the Iraq and Afghan wars during the current election campaign.
There are no American war resisters currently settled in Quebec but 12 former United States soldiers are seeking refugee status in Canada.
One former soldier was deported back to the United States last July.
