Another person has died from listeriosis, health officials in Alberta said on Saturday.
They confirmed two new cases of the potentially deadly bacterial infection and said that one of the victims has died.
Health officials also said the two cases were linked to the national recall of meat products made by a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Ontario.
There have been at least nine cases of listeriosis in Alberta since the beginning of 2008, but one of those cases is still awaiting lab results before confirmation.
"It is important to remember we may never know what role listeriosis played in the death, but we must keep in mind Listeria is really only of concern to individuals who have weakened immune systems, the elderly, pregnant women and newborns," said Dr. Gerry Predy, Alberta's Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health.
"We will very likely see more cases linked to the outbreak, given the timeframes involved for symptoms to show up and testing to occur."
On Friday, a death in B.C. was also linked to the Maple Leaf Foods outbreak, as 50 more products were added to an already lengthy recall list.
Many of the most recently recalled products -- including hospitality and party trays, submarine sandwiches and wraps -- were sold in Sobeys and Foodland stores throughout Atlantic Canada. The items have best-before dates up to and including August 25, 26 and 27.
On Friday, the Public Health Agency of Canada said there were 29 confirmed cases of the outbreak strain in the country and 35 cases were under investigation.
