OTTAWA - Canadian TV celebrities and celebrity wannabees are calling for more domestic programming as Canadian broadcasters gather in the capital.
Members of ACTRA, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists union, demonstrated outside a hotel in Ottawa today, demanding more money be spent producing Canadian content for television.
Robb Wells, who plays Ricky on the Trailer Park Boys TV series, says too many Canadian actors are going to the United States for work.
He says Canada's regulator needs to revisit a 1999 decision that allowed TV networks to decide how much Canadian content they would broadcast.
Art Hindle, who has performed in countless movies and television series, says Canadian broadcasters spend too much money buying American programming and not enough producing Canadian shows.
As the marchers protested, members of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters were inside, meeting at their annual convention.
ACTRA represents more than 21,000 self-employed performers working in the English-language recorded media, including actors, comedians, dancers and voiceover artists.
